children overboard affair

a controversy relating to a claim that in October 2001 children were thrown overboard from a boat carrying people seeking asylum in Australia, in an attempt to force Australian navy ships to pick them up; this claim, later proven to be inaccurate, was used by government members as a campaign tool in the election of November 2001.
